I’ve been working as an intern with the Social Media Team since January on several amazing clients at Propaganda.
The clients I’ve worked for are Kryolan, Crystal Clear, Neal & Wolf, The Car People and FMG, assisting with their social media platforms and furthering their presence online. I am now somewhat of an expert with Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram and Vine!
Being an intern isn’t all about press-releases and sell-ins; I’ve written blog posts, helped with blogger launch events and made some great contacts that I’ll take away with me. And as the rest of the social media team will tell you, my tea isn’t much good either so there’s no chance of me being the ‘tea girl’.
I think it’s sometimes hard to find agencies or consultancies that will give you those first opportunities to shine. I know that as a first year student on my Public Relations and Communications course at Leeds Metropolitan University finding placements at this early stage can be difficult. I have luckily been successful so far and am now on my second placement, which I’ve spent with Propaganda. For that I’m incredibly grateful, as I know I still have a long way to go. However, the amount of knowledge that going on placement here has given me is priceless. And Propaganda is just simply described best by the word ‘cool’.
I think one of the most important things I have learnt is about how a consultancy actually works. These are the things that you can’t possibly learn by just going to university and never venturing out on placement. They don’t take themselves too seriously at Propaganda, and that’s a trait I love. We had a bake-off at work for Comic Relief and I made cupcakes that contributed to an amazing total of £230 raised. We also have bite-size briefings where everyone comes together with what’s going on, and we eat pizza, which I love. It’s these things that you don’t get to see sitting in a lecture theatre.
It is hard work and it is time consuming but I think going on placement is an incredibly rewarding move for your future career. Now all I want to do is get out there myself!
