Smith of Derby, the historic makers of grand timepieces, has appointed strategic and creative agency, Propaganda, to relaunch the John Whitehurst brand. With a history dating back to the late 1600s, the John Whitehurst brand is steeped in heritage and character. Propaganda has been tasked with creating and executing a six-figure launch campaign that will target ownership of the John Whitehurst timepieces - likely to cost in excess of £50,000 each - to collectors and aficionados of premium watch brands.
John Whitehurst (1713-1788) was a clock maker to royalty and some of Britain's most revered families. Whitehurst was appointed the King's Inspector of the Money Weights and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He was also a renowned scientist who made significant contributions to the science of clock making at this time. He was a founder member of the Lunar Society and his contemporaries included Matthew Boulton, Erasmus Darwin, Josiah Wedgewood and James Watt.
Bob Betts, Smith of Derby, managing director explained: "Time pieces, especially watches, hold a special appeal for so many people, especially for men. And grand time pieces are a natural extension of this. John Whitehurst was a remarkable man - undisputedly one of the most famous clock makers of his time. And with his skills and experience directly handed down through the generations to Smith of Derby, we are able to sympathetically translate the traditional characteristics of a Whitehurst into a contemporary design."
The campaign supporting the launch will include a highly targeted affiliate marketing programme, PR, online activity and literature support.
Propaganda chairman, Julian Kynaston, commented: "We really are honoured to be working on such a historic brand. Today's consumer is fascinated by brands with true heritage and provenance, brands that have a credible tale to tell - a story behind the product. Whitehurst has this in abundance, and we believe that a premium, aspirational positioning offers opportunities right across the globe."
